It almost seems funnier knowing how he really feels underneath it all. Regardless, still great stuff. My first Doug Stanhope special, and now I am a fan. The show starts in a simple way, he seemed like a regular comic at first. But then he got darker. And then he told a story about mom's suicide, which was one of the more fucked up things I heard lately. After that, he started making sense about 'occupy' movement, actually changing the world for the better, gays (that long football story reminded me of a buddy of mine who goes into graphic stuff like that like all the time). As dark and brilliant as ever, Beer Hall Putsch has some of Doug's best bits he's yet committed to video. The closing bit, like always, is genius. I saw this material live and it pains me to know that there is so much more great shit that didn't even make it into this taped version. Doug is always worth a look and doing it better than just about anyone these days. Whilst not his best special, Stanhope still squeezes every single last laugh out of the small amount of subjects he tackles in this one, including his, arguably, most infamous bit; a ten minute true story about aiding the suicide of his own mother, which is so perfect in delivery and content that it manages to push the wonderfully and unflinchingly descriptive "60 inches of AIDS on any given sunday" to second place. I'll never tire of Doug Stanhope and his gravelly, bitter delivery.
